A thought-provoking drama set in a concentration camp will be staged for the first time in the county at the end of this month.

Bent, by Martin Sherman, which was performed at the National Theatre in 1990 with Sir Ian McKellen, is this season’s opening production for the Masque Theatre company.

The play is set in Berlin in the 1930s and then in a concentration camp just before the outbreak of war, and tells the story of homosexual lovers Max and Rudy who fall into the hands of the Gestapo.

At the camp, Max is taken under the wing of Horst, who shows him how to survive, and he decides it is safer to wear the yellow star of the Jew on his camp uniform rather than the pink triangle of the homosexual.

But the play shows how fear — real or imaginary — forces people to deny who they are, and how some individuals need to stand up and be counted.

This play includes scenes and language of an adult nature and some nudity.

Bent will be performed at Northampton College Studio, St Gregory’s Road, from October 26-30 at 7 .45pm. Tickets cost £6/ £5.
