A pound of flesh; a debt to pay
Rob Kendall, director
“The quality of mercy is not strained - it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath" Act IV.
This quotation form Portia’s speech (who is acting as a lawyer in the trial over Shylock’s claim for his pound of flesh for Antonio’s faulty debt) is a thread that runs through the play.
The story is about justice and honour and also about the mores of Venetian society and Shylock’s place as a Jew. It is also about the vagaries of fortune as well as about the right to marry who you ‘love’ - whether Christian or Jew.
To some extent these themes are as universal as they were in Shakespeare’s day. The trial scene in particular shows this. But the bonds of love, friendship and, even comedy, are there too.
For this reason, I’ve brought the performance of the play more into the 20th Century and set it in the Venice of the late 1920s when Mussolini had established his ‘Fasci Italiani’ political power group which created some of the attitudes we still see today. As it happens the play has a happy ending for those who are in ‘love’, but not necessarily one for Shylock.
