PREVIEW: An exploration of what makes us laugh
Tom Morath, MYT director

Having worked with our assistant director Tim Page on a piece of silent comedy, Upton Park, as part of Masque Youth Theatre's production Ringtime in 2008, the genre has always been close to my heart.

I enjoy the fine intricacies and the hard work that goes into making comedy both enjoyable to perform but also funny to watch.

This is a fine balance to strike as the current youth theatre have been finding out.

With more than just a little unfluence from Upton Park, since late last year the group have been moving towards creating their own dilent comedy piece.

We began by looking at the Old Masters: Keaton and Chaplin, the best known of these.

"The chance to laugh along with a timeless style of comedy whilst following a story of love."

We also looked at what made us laugh and how this is achieved, even breaking down the famous chandelier scene from Only Fools and Horses to understand the rule of three so evident in many comedic scenes.

Our workshops enabled the group to trial actions and vocals that we found funny. Sometimes things didn't work but that's all part of the exploration and any piece of comedy theatre will now be better because of it.

Throughout our work, Tim's experience and expertise pushed us along towards a higher quality of performance in this genre.

Now we are working towards a performance of a new story following the lives of two young lovers.

Amelia is clever and confident and everything Harry needs.

Unfortunately, Harry is not much good at being a lover and falls at many hurdles and literally tens of characters along the way to thwart his every attempt ti make amends.

Leap Year is set to offer any audience the chance to laugh along with a timeless style of comedy whilst following a story of love.

Much of the piece is devised by members of the group with direction from Amy, Tim and myself to build a unique piece of theatre to be enjoyed by all ages.
